Arctic “death spiral” leaves climate scientists shocked and worried | The Vancouver Observer – Page 1

An in depth report on why we should be very worried about the melting ice-caps.  and why we in the Global North should be cutting back our excessive consumption, especially of fossil fuels.  Time to ditch the car and walk, cycle or use public transport.  And do you really need to fly any where?

An interesting article about the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), drawing attention to why people normally change boilers. The whole Green Deal, has been set-up to benefit the biggest energy companies not local tradesman or the public themselves. I think this just shows the Government are not really serious about reducing the country’s carbon footprint.

This post is by Adam Bell, Green Alliance’s policy adviser on low carbon energy.

The next ten years must see a revolution in the way we heat our homes. A third of the UK’s carbon emissions come from heat, and we will need to both reduce the amount of heat we use in homes, and change the way we produce it, if we are to have any chance of meeting our carbon targets.

Heat exchange
The Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is intended to help achieve this by providing financial incentives to homes and businesses to replace their current heating with a renewable system, such as a heat pump, a solar thermal installation, or a biomass boiler.

Monsanto weedkiller and GM maize in ‘shocking’ cancer study | News | The Grocer

More prove in any more was needed, that GM crops and foods produced from then are not needed.  When Genetically Modified crops came on the market, they were nicknamed ‘Frankenstein’ foods.  It looks like GM food is living up to this name.

I am not a supporter of animal testing.

Ethex – Blogs

An interesting blog about the Bristol Pound, where local traders are accepting the local currency in preference to using the normal banking system.  It is something that has come out of the Transition Towns movement such as Transition Towns Totnes

The first in the country and the first to introduce it’s own currency.

The Climate Committee is right – the government created this appalling investment climate – 13 Sep 2012 – James’ Blog: a blog from BusinessGreen.

An article about the continuing sorry state of the lack of Government support for renewable energy and any hope of reducing our dependence on imported energy and our carbon footprint.

A nice article about the campaign to save Ancoats Dispensary. English Heritage and Manchester City Council, all failed in their ‘Duty of Care’, in enforcing Urban Splash (Bloxham) to carry out the necessary repair work to maintain the building in the state, Urban Slash find the building in. In fact the council have broken the law, by passing the demolition order, when it obvious the building has been neglected. In fact, a number of artefacts have gone missing under Urban Splashes ownership. Also Jim Battle, deputy Leader of Manchester City Council and Labour councillor for Ancoats, was laughing and joking about this sad state of affairs, some weeks ago, stating that of course the building would decay, after Urban Splash took the roof off!

As always, there are those, like those who have posted comments to this blog, are dismissive of any attempt to reduce energy use. Which is what is very necessary to becoming anywhere self sufficient in energy and reducing emissions.

President Obama had a hard time selling the US’s ‘weatherization program’ to a sceptical Congress: insulation is a lot less attractive than visible clean tech like solar panels. So he relied on his charm, declaring memorably that insulation was, in fact, sexy. “Here’s what’s sexy about it — saving money,” he said, to laughter and applause.

Massachusetts’ Clean Economy Sees Massive Growth, Now Hosts 71,000 Jobs In Cleantech

This article shows what can be achieved with a strong political leadership.  While in the UK, we have a Government that keeps changing FITs (feed-in tariffs) for renewable technologies and is promoting large utilities companies with their Green Deal.  The UK will not be able to survive what is ultimately going to come, in not that a distance future.  Manchester City Council is the same, they keep claiming to be ‘Green’, whilst actually doing anything different than before.  They constantly says they cannot do anything without others doing something as well.  I think this article promotes the vision, that it can be done where there is the will.

pby Andrew, via CleanTechnica Government investment and support for clean, renewable energy development is paying off handsomely in Massachusetts, where the clean energy economy grew 11.2% between July 2011 and July 2012. The state’s fast-growing clean energy sector now employs 71,523 people at 4,995 clean energy businesses across the state, according to a Massachusetts Clean […]/p

We have seen the Scottish Government investing in wave and tidal technologies.  The UK has some of the best wave and tidal resources available in the world and has not been exploited by the UK Government.

As well as investing in wind, another asset, the UK has in abundance:

Breathingearth – CO2, birth & death rates by country, simulated real-time

A very interesting animation showing populations, births, deaths and CO2 emissions.  If you hover your mouse over a country, you can see what the countries CO2 emission are at the time of viewing, the total CO2 emissions per person and whether this country has reduced it’s CO2 emission from 4 years earlier.  It gives a very visual indication of those countries that need to do the most to reduce CO2 emissions.  And of course, the UK is one of the villains, compare us to Norway.  The US is of course the really big bady.  Basically politicians in the Global North have just talked about it then supported the fossil fuel industries in continuing polluting.

There may be question marks over the accuracy but I feel this is a good visual tool.
